How to tell if a cactus needs repotting?

Roots are sticking out from below.
I'm not very skilled with plants and I'm learning by trial and error. I don't want to rush, but I also don't want to underdo it and make things worse later.

If the roots are coming out or the pot is misshapen, it's time to change it to one 2 cm larger.
After several trials, I realized that patience was key. Sometimes I did nothing and that was exactly what it needed.
